鳥は羽の模様や身体の形状、色彩などさまざまな魅力を持つ。本研究は、鳥の細部に宿るその種ならではの美しさや形のリズムに着目し、それらを文様として抽出・再構成することで、鳥のグラフィック的な新たな可能性を示すことを目的としている。最終成果物としては、制作した44種の文様を「鳥文様図案帖」にまとめた。 文様は、実際に自分で撮影した写真を資料とし、①鳥の特定部位が持つ模様にフォーカスし再構成するもの、と、②鳥の特徴的なカタチを抽出し、それらを組み合わせて文様にするもの、の大きく2つのアプローチで制作を行った。文様構成時には、日本の伝統文様を応用し、名称もそれをもとに命名することでより親しみやすさを感じてもらえるようにしている。 図案帖にまとめる際には、日本の伝統的な染色技法である型染め（ステンシル）の手法を取り入れた。アナログ的な手法により、ランダムなずれや多少の滲みが生まれ、鳥文様の持つ魅力をさらに引き立たせてくれている。また、構造色を持つ鳥の表現では、パールを含む塗料を用いることで、光の当たり方によって見え方が変化する特徴を示唆し、鳥が本来備えている質感の再現を試みた。 本研究の文様の中から、それぞれのお気に入りを見つけてもらい、鳥の細部に宿る意匠の美しさを再発見する一助となれば幸いである。

Birds possess a wide range of appealing qualities, including the patterns of their feathers, the forms of their bodies, and their rich coloration. This study focuses on the beauty and rhythmic forms unique to each species as found in these details, and aims to demonstrate new graphic possibilities of birds by extracting and reconstructing these elements as patterns. As the final outcome, 44 original patterns were compiled into a volume titled “Bird Pattern Design Collection.” The patterns were created using photographs that I personally took as primary reference materials. The production process followed two main approaches: (1) focusing on distinctive patterns found on specific parts of a bird’s body and reconstructing them into a design, and (2) extracting characteristic shapes of birds and combining those forms to create new patterns. In constructing these designs, methods from traditional Japanese patterns were applied, and the names of the works were also derived from traditional naming conventions in order to create a sense of familiarity for viewers. When compiling the designs into the book, the traditional Japanese dyeing technique of katazome (stencil dyeing) was incorporated. This analog process produces slight misalignments and subtle bleeding, which further enhance the expressive qualities of the bird-inspired patterns. In addition, for birds known for their structural coloration, paints containing pearl pigments were used to suggest the way their appearance changes depending on the angle of light, thereby attempting to recreate the unique visual qualities inherent to the birds themselves. It is my hope that viewers will find their own favorite among these works and that this project may serve as an opportunity to rediscover the beauty of the design elements embedded in the fine details of birds.
